Scholarships: Young people walking into their future
Alex's journey to becoming a teacher17th January 2026
For families living in poverty, the weight of responsibility rests not just on the parents, but the children, too. How can they be empowered as they enter society as adults?
Born into poverty in Moldova, Alex dreamed of being a Maths teacher since he was a little boy. But throughout his childhood years, he learned how to be the family’s main carer. He had grown up without a father, his older brother has severe learning difficulties, and when Alex was still a teenager, his mother was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, battling ongoing mental health struggles.
Now in his 20s, Alex's journey with MWB started with him being enrolled in our Child Sponsorship Program, which is when he first met staff member Ion.
“Brother Ion and I have known eachother since I was in the second grade. He saw potential in me and he’s encouraged me since middle school. He continues to support me emotionally, spiritually, and financially through MWB,” shared Alex.
“I remember him as a small child, how hard it was for him and how happy he used to be when I visited his family,” Ion said, moved with emotion. “I’m glad to see Alex close to God now, going to university.”
What started off as Sponsorship led to Alex finding faith in God and joining MWB’s Scholarship Program. Now Alex is studying to become a Maths and Computer teacher – just like he dreamed.
“Every day is different. I usually wake up early, around 6 or 7am and go to bed late around midnight... sometimes as late as 2am. During university term time, my days are very busy because I have classes until 3pm, and after classes I come home and help my mother with chores around the house. In the evening I get ready for lessons the next day.”
“I have various financial challenges. The Mission scholarship is a big blessing to me because many of my expenses are covered,” he said. “If it wasn’t for this scholarship, I’m not sure I could follow my dream!”
Alex now has hope while he walks the path he’s always dreamed of being on.
“I find it difficult to cope with everything. Every day I end up tired to the limit, but the Lord gives me strength, ” he said.
“What inspires me to become a teacher is my love for children and my love for teaching.
“I want to become a good teacher of mathematics and computer science and to be a good example to students, teaching many generations to change the world for the better.”
A good education is so important for families to see a life outisde of poverty.
By supporting a Scholarship with MWB, you can journey alongside a young person as they pursue further studies and grow into who they are meant to be.
