A global missions leader shaped by bold faith and a lifelong passion for serving the church is the new International CEO of Mission Without Borders.

Rev. Johannes (Hans) van Baaren brings more than 35 years of experience in global missions and Christian leadership, having served in strategic roles within Operation Mobilization’s Ships Ministry, including on the Logos II, Doulos, and Logos Hope, across Europe and the United States.

His ministry journey began in the late 1980s with transformative “smuggling” trips to Eastern Europe, secretly visiting pastors in Romania, then still under Ceaușescu’s repressive regime – experiences that deeply shaped his lifelong calling.

Hans combines a pastoral heart with visionary leadership, overseeing approximately 1000 workers across 40 countries in his most recent role as European Director of OM.

With academic backgrounds in both Business Administration and Theology, he offers a rare blend of practical wisdom and spiritual discernment.

Hans is passionate about partnering with and supporting the local church to bring lasting Gospel transformation, a value that deeply resonates with the vision of Mission Without Borders.

Michael Thomas, chair of the board, said, “We are delighted to welcome Hans as our new CEO. He brings significant experience, a passion for our work and the leadership gifts that will steer towards an exciting future.”

Hans said, “I am honoured to lead Mission Without Borders into a new season of growth and impact, building on our mission to share Christ’s love in practical ways that bring hope, dignity, and transformation across Eastern Europe.”

Mission Without Borders is an international network of Christian organisations linking donors and sponsors to children, families and vulnerable adults in Eastern Europe, bringing community, hope and a brighter future.
