Boxes of Hope
When you put hope in a mother's hands, you change everything this Christmas."Sometimes I feel like we've been forgotten, like the world has moved on and left us. But in those darkest moments, I always hoped for a miracle."
Esmerelda lives with her three young sons and husband Kostadin in an unfinished home in Bulgaria.
They share one room, with no inside bathroom or toilet. Kostadin works hard, but jobs are scarce and wages are low. Every day, the family struggles to afford basic necessities—even putting food on the table.
As Christmas approached, their hardships intensified. The freezing weather meant higher heating costs and the need for warm clothing. Without seasonal work, celebrating Christmas felt impossible.
"There were moments when despair almost overwhelmed me. We knew we needed to buy both food and nappies, but we didn't know what to do."
Then help arrived.
When Ventsislav delivered a Box of Hope to their door, it was more than just food and supplies—it was a message that they are not alone, not forgotten.
"I didn't think we would eat so much at Christmas!" beamed five-year-old Mladen, as his younger brothers Joan and Krasimir excitedly discovered the delicious treats inside.
"This package means we can have a special meal together," Esmerelda said with tears in her eyes. "It's not just food; it's love and kindness. This will be a Christmas to remember."

Changes Everything
"Without the open hearts of donors, without their empathy and generosity, we wouldn't be able to help families like Esmerelda's. Every box we deliver is an expression of Christ's love and compassion and the hope He gives us. Every smile we see on the faces of these families is proof that kindness and compassion can change the world."Ventsislav, Mission Coordinator, Bulgaria
Want to know more about us?
Mission Without Borders has been operating in Eastern Europe and the region of Ukraine for over 60 years. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain we have worked to journey alongside Eastern Europes most poor and vulnerable. Our vision is to see lives transformed across generations with hope for the future.
We have a strong network of well-established partnerships across the region. All our field staff are local to their respective countries and this ensures our ability to respond quickly in a crisis and guarantees the longevity of our work and impact.
Our history shows that when other great humanitarian relief agencies leave, we continue to stay to restore and rebuild.
We work across Eastern Europe in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine.
We work in communities where poverty is entrenched, economic opportunities are few, and social issues such as alcoholism and domestic abuse are widespread.
We support children, families, the elderly and homeless.
Our response addresses the complex nature of poverty for families, and the need for emotional and spiritual support, as well as material help.
We have local staff and partner churches that work together to build community, share God’s love, and bring hope and transformation in the long-term.
Relationships are at the core of our work, knowing that lasting support is what strengthens and grows people towards real transformation.
Our purpose remains the same as it did over 60 years ago: reaching people for Christ.
For us, that means living out the truth of God’s love and redemptive power in Eastern Europe through acts of service and long-term help for people living in poverty.
